Courage

Learning about Courage: by Cheryl Kives guidance counsellor The Character Education word this month is courage. Showing courage can be hard. It means doing something that is a little scary. Showing courage helps you test yourself and helps you learn new things. Students at SJR have learned about courage and a few students in 5VS presented a skit about it. Other students discussed what it means to have courage and they said that they used to be scared of trying new food, swimming, going to the movies, diving off the diving board, the dark, doing a recital and learning new sports. Students said that once they tried something new, and realized they could do it, they were not scared anymore. They learned that courage is having the strength to beat their fears.

Constable Dave Tyndale delivered a presentation to the grade 5 students on drug awareness.

Constable Tyndale talked about the importance of delivering a presentation so early to students so that students are can get the real facts and know the sad reality of the harmful effects of drugs on your body.

Part of our mission at SJR is for students to develop social responsibility in order to become compassionate and confident individuals.

 

In order to do this, students need character qualities such as a strong work ethic, self discipline, and perseverance to help them achieve their best in school and succeed in life.

Anti Bullying

What is Bullying? By Cheryl Kives Junior School Counsellor

Bullying is negative, hurtful acts that are intentional and repetitive. Bullying Behaviour involves a misuse of power to cause physical, verbal or indirect abuse of another person.

Bullying behaviour usually has some of these characteristics:

Targets a weaker person

Involves an abuse of power

Negative, hurtful behaviour

Intentional and repetitive

Bystanders play an important role in bullying. Their mere presence is support for the bully if the y don’t intervene.
