Character Education at SJR by Cheryl Kives Guidance Counsellor

Part of our mission at SJR is for students to develop social responsibility in order to become compassionate and confident individuals.

In order to do this, students need character qualities such as a strong work ethic, self discipline, and perseverance to help them achieve their best in school and succeed in life.  They also need character qualities such as respect and responsibility to develop positive interpersonal relationships and live a meaningful community life.

Character Education in the Classrooms

Teachers are given a Character Education Word and are encouraged to teach this word and utilize it in the classroom.

Students then present the word at Assembly and the meaning of this word is internalized through their work which is then presented in the form of a skit.

There is a Character Education Board with all Character Education Words posted on the first floor of Junior School.

The new Character Education Word at the moment is “Friendship”.

Character Education Words that have been taught in the past were Diligence, Perseverance, Tolerance, Generosity, and Friendship.
