oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico

Are you aware of the current environmental disaster that is happening right now in the Gulf of Mexico?

You can use technology to find out about all sides of this story.

Use Google Earth, type "Gulf of Mexico", and then click on the numerous links available: videos, news reports, etc. You can also download special "layers" which will show you how big the oil spill is.

Use Google's news search to compare different news reports of the oil spill. Read, for example, British Petroleum's news releases and compare them to Canada's CBC, the United States' CNN, or England's BBC.

Could another oil spill be on the way near Canada? Some people think so! Find out the facts by doing some online research!

Xtranormal
This is a website that allows users to create their own animated videos. It recognizes typed-text as speech, so the characters in the movie will say what you type.

Wordle
This site allows users to create "word clouds".

Vancouver Olympics 2010
An excellent site for research on the Winter Olympics. It contains videos, games, pictures, and articles.
Students have to be careful about clicking on advertisements.

Whyzz
A search engine made specifically to answer kids' common questions.

Prezi
A site that allows users to create non-linear presentations. Like PowerPoint, but cooler.

SumoPaint
Online paint program. Works like Microsoft Paint, but includes many more features.

Educational Gmail
Grade 4/5 students now have Gmail accounts. This includes Documents (online Word processor), Spreadsheets, Presentations (online PowerPoint) and Sites (students can make their own webpages and blogs). Teachers can see Roland if they would like to create an account and try it out.

Other things to try:

Google Earth: try recording a tour.
Google Earth: try viewing the "street view" of Winnipeg.
SMART Notebook and explore the Educator's Lesson Activity toolkit.
Blog: Try making your own blog or update your current blog. See Roland.

Students compose and record songs that teach about how to stop bullying!

Students worked with Ms. Kives, Junior School Guidance Counselor, to compose rap songs that teach other students about strategies to prevent bullying. Their songs are based on the students' personal experiences.

NM also wrote, "This Sunday I am going to Agra to see the world-famous Taj Mahal- it is the #1 Wonder of the Modern World. It is a 4-hour ride from New Delhi to Agra."

update from India

Our world traveller has travelled to a town called Deoghar, India. You can find this town in India on this map here. This is a "live map", which means you can zoom in and around the map. Feel free to explore all the parts of India.

Our student NM answered a question I had about India. I asked if India has a special day to remember people who have died in wars, like how Canada has Remembrance Day. NM told me that India has"Shaheed Divas" which means "War Peoples Day". NM said that this is celebrated on January 26. I did some research and found out that January 26 is known as Indian Republic Day.

NM has been emailing classmates and friends in Mrs. Knowles' classroom. It has been exciting to keep in touch with one of our students, even if the student is half-way around the world!

Grade 5 Atom-2 Hockey Team: Special Report

A student's trip to India

I received a message from our student in India. Here are some highlights from the message:

Greetings from India!

Thank you Mr. Buduhan, for taking this initiative and for helping me stay connected with my classmates back in Canada.
I am very excited to be here in India and meet all of my relatives after 4 years!

After a tiring flight of 28 hours, we finally reached the New Dehli airport.

The next day we had to get all our luggage un-packed. I thought the day went by so quickly.

What major things have been happening at school while I have been here? I am having a terrific time here in New Dehli and I hope you are all also having a good time.
